Used ASIC Miner Profitability: Payback Math for Second-Hand Rigs
A used ASIC miner is profitable or not for one reason: whether the revenue it earns per terahash exceeds the electricity it burns per terahash at your rate. Purchase price only decides how long payback takes, not whether you are in the money.
Here is the arithmetic, in the order you should run it, plus the stress tests that stop a good-looking spreadsheet turning into a shed full of paperweights.
Step one: daily power cost
Multiply wall watts by 24, divide by 1,000 for kWh per day, then multiply by your all-in rate per kWh including delivery charges and demand fees. A 3,250 W machine draws 78 kWh per day; at $0.06 that is $4.68 of electricity.
Use the wall figure, not the marketing figure. Tuned firmware and warm inlet air both change real draw, and a used machine is rarely exactly at spec.
Step two: daily revenue and margin
Take current hashprice — revenue per terahash per day — and multiply by measured terahash. Subtract the power cost and any pool fee and hosting charge. What remains is your true daily margin.
Divide the delivered purchase cost by that daily margin to get payback in days. Under cheap power, used S19-class hardware often pays back in months; above ten cents per kWh the same machine may never clear its own electricity.
Step three: find your breakeven J/TH
Every electricity rate implies a maximum efficiency you can run. Divide hashprice by your rate per kWh, convert to joules, and you get the J/TH above which a machine loses money. Compare that ceiling against each candidate's real efficiency.
This one number filters the market faster than any spec table: hardware above your ceiling is not a bargain at any price.
Stress-test difficulty and price
Rerun the model with hashprice 30 percent lower and difficulty 15 percent higher. If the machine still covers electricity, it survives a bad quarter; if it does not, treat the purchase as a leveraged bet rather than an investment.
Also model uptime honestly. Ninety percent availability on a used fleet is realistic without spares on the shelf, and that lost tenth comes straight off margin.

Used miners dominate on capital efficiency: the dollars at risk per terahash are small, so a drawdown hurts less and you can scale in steps. They also make excellent heat sources for space and water heating, which is real value the spreadsheet ignores.
