New hardware buys you manufacturer warranty, unopened hashboards and the longest remaining service life, and it is the right call for anyone deploying at scale on a multi-year power contract. The premium over used equivalents is real but so is the reduced operational risk.

Supplier-warranted used machines are where most of the value sits. Pure as-is used hardware only makes sense if you can repair boards yourself or absorb a failure without it hurting.

Available amperage is the constraint that catches new buyers. A full-size ASIC wants 200-240 V at 15-20 A; a standard North American household outlet does not supply that. Count your spare breaker capacity first, then decide how many machines the site can actually host, then shop.

Run the arithmetic before the emotion: multiply the machine's wall draw in kilowatts by 24 and by your all-in power rate to get daily electricity cost, then subtract that from the pool revenue the hashrate earns at today's difficulty. For Antminer S21+ at 3877 W that is roughly 93.0 kWh a day per unit before cooling overhead.

Then add the costs nobody advertises: PDUs and cabling, filtration, a spare PSU and hashboard per ten machines, fan replacements at roughly the two-year mark, and the labour hours you will spend on maintenance. Budget five to eight percent of hardware value annually for operations and you will not be surprised.

The failure mode in this market is almost never the hardware — it is the transaction. Insist on a named legal entity, a verifiable phone number, a written warranty term, an invoice issued before funds move, serial numbers photographed on the machines you are actually buying, and a test report showing hashrate and per-board temperatures from a real bench run.
