Mining outside SHA-256 concentrates your revenue in a single asset. The Antminer KS series produces 8.3-21 TH/s on kHeavyHash, and your entire return depends on that coin's price and network difficulty rather than on the deepest, most liquid market in the sector.

KS-series and IceRiver economics at current Kaspa difficulty. That concentration cuts both ways: returns can substantially exceed bitcoin mining during a strong period for the coin, and they can collapse faster than any difficulty adjustment can compensate for.

Smaller networks are far more sensitive to hardware supply. A single large batch of new ASICs shipping into a modest network can double difficulty within weeks and halve your revenue per unit of hashrate. Track announced hardware releases for the coin you are mining as closely as you track its price.

This is the main reason altcoin ASIC resale prices move violently. Plan your payback assuming a supply shock arrives, not assuming it does not.

Run the arithmetic before the emotion: multiply the machine's wall draw in kilowatts by 24 and by your all-in power rate to get daily electricity cost, then subtract that from the pool revenue the hashrate earns at today's difficulty. For Antminer KS series at 3400 W that is roughly 81.6 kWh a day per unit before cooling overhead.

Because of the volatility, we model altcoin hardware on shorter payback targets than bitcoin machines — typically demanding a materially faster break-even to compensate for the additional risk. If the model only works over a long horizon, the risk is not being paid for.

Check the secondary market for the model before you buy. Hardware with an active resale market lets you exit when the thesis changes; hardware with none leaves you holding a machine that only earns in one narrow scenario.

Pool support is the differentiator. Confirm at least two reputable pools support the algorithm with reliable payouts before you commit capital, and configure both for failover on day one.

The failure mode in this market is almost never the hardware — it is the transaction.
